Alameda County authorities were poised yesterday to issue an arrest warrant for Miguel Nunez- Castaneda, the prime suspect in the 2003 slaying of a young woman who was to become internationally known as Castro Valley’s “Jane Doe.”  “This is not your typical case,” said Sgt. In early 1973, as Watergate was becoming a national tragedy, President Nixon wanted his predecessor to pressure congressional Democrats to call off a Watergate investigation. If Lyndon Johnson failed to cooperate, the country would soon learn about bugs planted by the Democrats on Nixon’s 1968 campaign plane. Lyndon Johnson sent a “hot” denial back to Nixon and, in turn, threatened to release intercepted cables from the South Vietnamese embassy in Washington to Saigon demonstrating that the Nixon campaign had interfered in the 1968 peace negotiations by discouraging Nguyen Van Thieu, the head of the South Vietnamese government, from a preelection settlement.….Read more…

With this year’s theme “board games,” Castro Valley High celebrated it homecoming last Friday with a parade, skits, cheers and football. The afternoon festivities started with the annual class parade around the school. The crowd seemed a little smaller than in the past but those who braved the forecast for rain were treated to a very enthusiastic student body and class parade of floats. “My wife and I come ever year,” said John Jones, a retired state employee. “The kids are a lot of fun.”…..Read more…

Kayla Schelling of Castro Valley, who is a student at Redwood Christian School, has qualified to compete for scholarships, cash prizes and trophies at the 2007-2008 national all- American Miss pre-teen pageant scheduled for the week of Thanksgiving in Anaheim. Schelling became eligible for the national competition after she placed fourth runner-up for the Queen’s title and third runner-up in casual wear modeling competitions.….Read more…

It was a sight to behold. From afar, reed-covered islets of Lake Chabot mimicked the ballet set from ‘Swan Lake’. A closer look, however, revealed the birds of different feathers.  “This is the first time in, like, six years, since I moved to Castro Valley, that I see white pelicans on the lake,” said George Redding, who walks the Chabot East Trail practically every day of the week.…..Read more…
