Sgt. Daniel Sakai, an Oakland Policeman who lived in Castro Valley, was one of four officers gunned down Saturday by a prison parolee in Oakland in one of the deadliest attacks on police in the state’s history.
The 35-year old Sakai and Sgt. Ervin Romans, both members of Oakland’s SWAT team, were shot to death as they burst into an East Oakland apartment house in attempt to arrest 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon, an ex-convict who, earlier that afternoon, had fatally wounded two other Oakland officers, Sgt. Mark Dunakin and Officer John Hege, during a routine traffic stop. Mixon was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. More

The Castro Valley School District has been unable to determine the source of a mass email sent anonymously to hundreds of parents’ home computer addresses two weeks ago accusing the district and high school teachers of promoting a “gay agenda” in CVHS classrooms.
The scathing criticism came following a two-day diversity program that addressed various cultural, racial and lifestyle issues as well as such wide-ranging topics as the history of Castro Valley, childen in foster care and life as a cowboy. More
