Two Alameda County Sheriff’s officers fatally wounded a man in a Castro Valley triplex Sunday afternoon after discovering the body of a woman lying on the floor next to him in an upstairs bedroom. 

Sheriffs Sgt. J.D. Nelson said the deputies had gone to the house in the 22400 block of North Fifth Ave. near the Hayward border after dispatchers had received calls from the woman’s friends who were concerned for her welfare. more

Bridge to New Library Over CV Creek to Be Installed on Saturday April 29, 2009

A bridge, made from a converted railroad flat car, will be installed this Saturday, spanning Castro Valley Creek and connecting pedestrians and bicyclists from Castro Valley Blvd. to the new library, although it won’t be open to the public until later this year because of construction. more

Beginning next Monday, a fleet of 13 new liquid natural gas (LNG) garbage collection trucks will be making the rounds in Castro Valley, part of Waste Management’s new contract with the Castro Valley Sanitary District. 

“Our community will enjoy cleaner air as a result of the new LNG vehicles,” said Sanitary District General Manager, Roland Williams. “Liquid natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel that produces fewer greenhouse emissions than coal or oil.”  more

It was no neighborhood prank when loud banging and repeated doorbell chiming in the early morning of April 10 woke Sheila Wright and her family who were fast asleep. It was neighbor Pat Brookens alerting the family their attic was engulfed in flames. 

“I had just came home from dropping off some friends and saw these 30 foot flames coming from the house,” explained Pat Brookens. “I started pounding on the door to wake them up and told them there was a fire.” more

At many crime scenes they help deputies “sniff” out important clues. At other times, they’re used in difficult search and rescue operations, helping to locate lost or disoriented people. 

And now, thanks to a donation by the Castro Valley Women’s Club the faithful K-9 of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office are being equipped with protective vests just like those worn by the deputies they serve. more
