Castro Valley rock legend Cliff Burton was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Bay Area band Metallica this month.
Burton’s father, Ray, accepted his son’s honorary induction during ceremonies in Cleveland, Ohio on April 4.
Cliff Burton, best known as a heavy metal bass player who made use of distortion and special effects, was killed in an accident in 1986, four years after joining Metallica. It was Burton’s early influence that helped create Metallica’s unique musical style for which the band has become famous. more
I was lucky enough to had seen Cliff with Metallica 3 times in 1985/1986 God bless him. we will never forget him.
Just to clarify, the only “special effect” Cliff ever used besides distortion was a “wah” pedal, which isn’t much of a special effect. I only bring this up becuase to say that he used special effects seems to imply that Burton’s playing was well-known for the use of processing effects, which was not the case at all. Cliff’s actual playing STYLE was what defined him as a player – His use of effects was only tertiary to his actual playing. His speed and agility, particularly for someone who did not use picks, was particularly remarkable – But his note choices and string-bending are probably his most characteristic traits. His influence on metal bassists cannot be measured. Cliff is sorely missed.
Not to correct you Paulie but Cliff did use delay and flange on occation during his solo spots.
I was lucky enough to grow up in Castro Valley during the earliest days of Metallica. I will always remember those summer nights in CV when the music of Cliff Burton and Michael “Yaz” Jastremski blasted thru our canyons. May they both forever rest in peace.
