Making good on their promise, officials of the Hayward Area Recreation District (HARD) are projecting Castro Valley’s Water Park will reopen in early July.

The popular water-and-sand play area in Castro Valley Community Park at 18988 Lake Chabot Road was closed a year ago by the district in an effort to reduce water use in the face of the continuing Northern California drought. more

The Alameda County Waste Management Authority and Recycling Board (also known as a href=”http://www.StopWaste.Org” target=”newNews”>www.StopWaste.Org) yesterday announced that residents and businesses can no longer send plant debris to landfills under a new law.

ffected materials include grass, leaves, shrubbery, vines, tree branches and plant trimmings which, if contaminated with even small amounts of garbage, would render them useless for the production of compost. more

‘Grateful Dads,’ Kids Share A Father’s Day Adventure June 24, 2009

A number of local kids and their dads spent Father’s Day morning camped out in the picturesque bluff area of Lake Chabot as part of the “Grateful Dads” monthly excursion where dads get some face time with each other.

“When I moved to Castro Valley I wanted to find a dads’ group,” explained Allen Mueller who founded the group eight years ago. “It all started in Marin and this chapter has really grown.” more

For nearly three decades, Oscar Miller has played host to hundreds of young baseball players who have trained in the four batting cages in his Fern Way back yard. But that era may be coming to an end.

Last week, in a standingroom- only meeting before the West County Board of Zoning Adjustments, Miller was ordered to either apply for a conditional use permit for his operation or to shut it down. more

When Melissa Alvarez saw a display in a bike shop for an upcoming AIDS LifeCycle fund-raiser event, she and her friends took applications home and excitedly encouraged each other register and participate.

“Going into it, everyone told me it’s more than just a ride but I was skeptical,” said Alvarez who returned June 6 from the 585-mile, seven-day trip from San Francisco to Los Angles to raise money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Each rider raised an average $3,000 for the foundation. more

California gas prices are on the rise again, leaving many who are fueling up or planning for a summer road trip feeling a pinch on their pocketbooks.

“I just got a little shock when we got to the pump!” exclaimed Colorado resident Tricia Soares as she pumped gas Monday morning at the Castro Valley Shell station during a visit with her daughter who lives in town. “It just went up there too…it’s something you just can’t avoid.” more
